actual free hobbies

So, if one were to Google "free hobbies," a list of about 20 will pop up. Only about 3 of these are actually free. Here is your guide to actual free hobbies...

Ok, first, I will start off with hobbies that do cost money, only because some of them can lead to being free eventually, or, will include materials that can last a long time. Some, though, are not free at all.

  1. Gardening. You have to buy plants, tools, special soil (depending on where you live), raised beds to protect your plants from small animals like rabbits, chicken wire to keep deer out, knee pads or a mat to protect your knees (if your knees are bad)- ok, you get it. A lot goes into gardening. However, once you get started, you then just have to water them and stuff and keep them alive... unless, of course, you become addicted and spend all your money on plants.

  2. Cooking. This one is just silly. This one is on every single "free hobbies" list, and it is probably the furthest from being free. Bro, the ingredients you have to buy to just make ice cost more than a house. This one is not free. This one will drive you into even more debt.

  3. Scrapbooking. You have to buy a lot of materials. Glue, stickers, paper, fabric, printing photos, other accessories- the list goes on! Of course, when you get a large supply of materials, you don't have to make anymore purchases for a while until you run out of something or get a new idea. I like going to Five Below for my pencils and stuff. They actually have pretty great stuff for good prices that are actually of decent quality. Another one, which I no longer do, is ROMWE. As per my last emai- I mean, blog post (like 2 back), I no longer participate in fast fashion. This website is just one of those sites where it took me a while to wake up and say, "hey, you know what, it is not normal for a company to release literally thousands of new products a day. Something fishy is going on." I will say though, I loved their scrapbooking supplies!

  4. Photography. I mean, unless you are going to be using your phone, you're gonna have to buy a nice camera, some lenses, a protective case, any special lighting, etc. But, if you're gonna use your phone, you can download free photo editing apps. My favorite one is Picsart. I have been using Picsart for several years. You can "go gold" and pay a monthly fee for special, more advanced features, but I have been able to master my way through the free stuff to get exactly the looks I want for my photos.

  5. Pottery. You need clay, special glaze, setting liquids, a firing oven, that spinny thing- yeah, not exactly "free." However, Five Below (mentioned above) has some great oven bake clay and air-drying clay. Yes, it is mostly for kids, but it's an easy and cheap way to learn how to make basic models and to see if it's even something you will be interested in for a long time.

  6. Hiking. You can't wear your early 2000s Converse high-top white sneakers with indented bottom rubber soles from wearing them to school every day through-out high school and some college. You need to get a pair of real, quality hiking boots. Otherwise, you're gonna get hurt sliding off a rock or have a bad foot-ache for several days. So, you're going to be spending roughly $100, if not more, for a good pair. I like wearing classic Timberlands as my outdoor boot. They last forever and they are very comfortable. They range in prices from $80 to almost $200, depending on the style.

Okay, so there you go. A list of 6 hobbies that can be fun and healthy, and fairly kind of decently not-so-expensive. But, we are here for the actual free things. So, here we go...

  1. Meditation. I'm not gonna lie, this one isn't my thing. My brain is too loud and peace is never an option. But, it's free. All you need is the ground to sit on. You don't even need clothes. You just need you. There are countless free meditation apps out there for guidance and stuff; peaceful music and singing whales or whatever.

  2. Writing. Every household has a pen and paper. If not a pen and paper, then it's what I'm doing right now; tapping away at my "notes" app on my phone, then on my Wix blog on my laptop. You, reading this, have at least one of those things. Just start writing or typing words down, you might end up somewhere...

  3. Reading. There are so many ways to read for free. Go to a library, download reddit (lmao), read fanfic about Simba falling in love with Scar, get audiobooks from Amazon or "Audible" (tons of free ones there), search a topic and read about it on discovery or animals- reading is everywhere!

  4. Rock hunting. This was my favorite thing to do as a child. Literally just go outside and try to find a cool rock. Of course, I have lived in a rural area my entire life, so it is easy to go outside and play in creeks and explore the woods. If you live in an urban or super-city area, then this one might limit you a bit.

  5. Blogging. This can fall under "writing," but it does have a different vibe to it. You probably have a laptop. At least a smart phone? Tablet, whatever. You have one of these things already, so all you have to do now is start blogging about anything you want! There are a ton of free blogging websites, but I use Wix as my free blogging spot.

  6. Singing. Just sing. While you are washing dishes, doing laundry, driving to work, whatever. Singing is good for the soul. Singing has been around since the beginning of mankind. It has been a way for us to communicate. It's natural, it makes sense. Learn new vocals! Find your voice! Even if you think you don't sound good, maybe it's just because you've been trying to reach notes out of your range! Learn about vocals and how to control them by watching YouTube videos or renting DVD's from the library. Videos are actually pretty good at explaining how to find your pitch, without having to pay thousands for an in-person lesson with a vocal trainer.

  7. Chess. You can play Chess for free at Chess.com. It's a very fun game once you learn how to play!

Okay, there's a small list here, but it's at least a list of actual free things you can do to entertain yourself. There are, of course, always more that did not make my list, but these are the ones I personally do, and they have been free for me so far.
