eight monthly book box subscriptions you should check out

Books have seen a recent spike in sales ever since the popular app TikTok has taken over internet interactions. It was not so much that the app talked about books, but it was a genre of TikTok videos that took the bookworms and dragons by storm: Booktok! Since Booktok began, books like ACOTAR (A Court of Thorns and Roses series by Sarah J. Maas) grew wildly over all bookstores, apps, social media, and Book Subscription Boxes. Here are eight of the coolest, best priced Monthly Subscription Boxes for 2023:

1. Bookish Box: Bookish Box Subscriptions have several monthly options. YA Book Only, YA Book and Goodies, YA Book, Shirt and Goodies, YA and Adult Book Only, Adult Book Only, Adult and Goodies, and Adult, Shirt, and Goodies. Phew! Prices start at $38 a month and go up to $63, depending on what plan you choose. Bookish Box’s Exclusive books are always gorgeous and come with cool features and, sometimes, extra goodies. They not only have subscription boxes, but they have a shop for bookish items, too! They have clothes, jewelry, candles, stickers, bookmarks, and so much more! Another feature they have is “Darkly by Bookish Box” featuring Romance and Spicy bookish selections. They have great reviews, but the number one complaint for Bookish Box would be delays in shipping of their monthly subscription boxes. At one point, according to comments on an Instagram post, Bookish Box was almost four months behind in shipments! I do not know where that stands as of right now, but it is something to keep in mind!

2. Fairyloot: Fairyloot lives in the Uk, but they do have a US online store, as well. They have four monthly subscription options: YA Book Only, YA Book and Goodies, Adult Book Only, and a combo of Adult and YA Book Only. Prices start at $25.90 a month up to $49.90 a month. They also have a store called the “Fairy Trove” where they sell bookish goodies such as bookmarks and art prints! Currently, there is a wait list for all monthly subscription boxes.

3. Used Books Monthly: Used Books Monthly is as simple as it gets. For as low as $5.49 a month, you can get a randomly selected book straight to your mailbox! Other options are 2 books a month for $9.99 a month, or 4 books a month for $16.99 a month. Choose your favorite genres and Used Books Monthly will do the rest!

4. LitJoy Crate: LitJoy Crate is full of fun options! They are also fully customizable! In their Bee Read Book Box Subscription, you can choose from 3 options: 1) an exclusive, signed book with their book only option, 2) The Standard Book Box Subscription where you get a signed copy of a book, along with special items that you can choose, and 3) The Deluxe Book Box Subscription that includes your signed book and all the high-quality bookish items exclusive to LitJoy Crate! Prices start from $75.96 a year to $249.96 a year. Currently, however, all three of these subscription choices are sold out. The other subscription option called “Magical Crates” was a similar concoction , but you can choose add-ons to go with your monthly box. LitJoy, however, recently announced that they will no longer be doing this subscription. So, hopefully that means the Bee Read Book Box options will open back up for purchase! In the meantime, they do have an open shop full of bookish items!

5. Once Upon a Book Club: Once Upon a Book Club absolutely has the most options to choose from for a monthly subscription. It is also a bit unique in the way they organize their boxes. They offer Adult, Young Adult, and Middle Grade boxes that you can pay monthly, 3 months, 6 months, or a full year. Adult and YA prices start at $49.99, or yearly for $570.00. The Middle Grade boxes are a bit cheaper, starting at $43.99 a month or $499 for a year. Now, what makes this box unique to others? The items inside the book shaped box are wrapped with page numbers on them. As you read the book, you are only to open the wrapped gifts when you reach that page number! It’s fun and interactive and it allows you to immerse yourself into the story in such a cool way! The box comes with, of course, an exclusive book that is a new release, 3-5 wrapped gifts, a signed book plate (included in select boxes), and a quote card and a bookmark that is designed to match the book! And the next best part? If you aren’t sure you’re ready to commit to a monthly subscription, you can buy a past box, or past box items, to see if it’s right for you!

6. llumicrate: Illumicrate comes with two options. One, for $38 a month, you get an exclusive hardcover book along with high-quality bookish items. Or 2, a book only option for $27 a month. There is currently a wait list for both options, protected by a password. So, I was unable to look deeper into these boxes. Illumicrate’s origins are in the UK, so the UK online shop has a lot more options than the US online shop, as of right now.

7. Unplugged: Unplugged is simple with two subscription options: an adult fiction, and a young adult fiction. Upon clicking on the adult fiction box, nothing comes up. So, I am assuming that means they are out of stock. However, the YA side has 2 options: a $39.99 a month book and self-care goodies box, and a $22.99 a month book only box. The goodies include 5-7 of either candles, teas and coffees, mugs, blankets, and so much more!

8. Owlcrate: Finally, we have Owlcrate. I have actually bought a box from Owlcrate from September of 2022 as a one time purchase to see what I thought of it. It’s pretty cool! It came with an exclusive book with exclusive art and a couple of bookish themed goodies. For $40, you can take a look at their past boxes and choose one for yourself! They currently have a lot of options still available on their website, including the exact one I bought! Their Adult Fantasy Box for subscriptions is currently out of stock and there is a wait list. They do, however, have a Middle Grade Book Only box and a Young Adult Book Only box available. The Middle Grade Book Only box starts at $20 a month, or, if you sign up for a 3 or 6 month, you get a dollar or so off your total: for 3 months is $56.97, or $107.94 total for 6 months. The Young Adult Book Only Box starts at $26.99 a box monthly, or for 3 months, $77.97 total, and for 6 months, $149.94 total. I know, a lot of numbers just happened. But don’t worry, there’s more! The Classic Owlcrate for Young Adults is currently available for July, and this one comes with goodies along with a book. Here we go, more numbers: $35.99 a month, 3 month total is $104.97, 6 month total is $203.94. Ok, almost done. They also have OwlCrate Jr. for the little ones. $32.99 a month, $95.97 for 3 months, and $185.94 for 6 months. This box comes with a book, an activity game or second book, and other goodies. Owlcrate also has an app! I used it for about a day and realized it wasn’t for me. It’s basically a social app for their buyers and subscribers. I’m a classic Goodreads user, so this just was not necessary for me. Also, a con for some people, perhaps, upon making an account, you have to agree to NOT EVER talk about Harry Potter or JK Rowling. It’s literally a rule that if you break, you are removed from the app, banned forever. So, if you’re a Potterhead and the books and movies shaped you into who you are today, this app and subscription is not for you- unless it is and you are okay with never talking about Harry Potter.

And there we have it: 8 monthly book subscriptions that I have found to be the most popular, affordable, and fun. I personally would love to try the LitJoy Crate one if they ever come back in stock. Which one interests you the most? Do you have a subscription with any of these? What do you think of it?
