I will review this book with as little spoilers as possible so that you, reader, can go into this book with fresh eyes and no opinions.
The story follows a group of young boys and their Scoutmaster. They are heading to an island to camp out and practice what survival skill they have been learning. Each kid has their own little quirk and problems. One kid is a nerd, one is the "normal" one who loves his mom, one is insane and loves hurting others, one is there for the ride.
One night, a strange man with a strange disease paddles on to the island and stumbles across the cabins where they boys are staying. The Scoutmaster awakes to hear clashing and chaos and he finds the strange man absolutely eating everything in sight. Something bad happens and then even worse things follow.
The disease spreads. Fast.
The boys find themselves alone on this island and they notice strange things happening along the coast and out in the distance.
The boys get separated and each have their own plan on what to do. Some of the boys stick together and form a pretty solid plan, but, well, "but"...
This book has a scene of animal cruelty that I quickly skimmed and took out key words just to know when it was over. Some pretty creepy and gross things happen towards the middle and end of the book. The beginning is slow but builds the story up nicely.
If you are new to horror/thriller novels, this one is perfect to start out with. It has a little bit of everything in it to test out what type of stuff you are interested. I like everything in horror except for animal cruelty, especially when it is described in detail; this book does have one scene like that.
